What is Walk a Mile?
Every year, San Luis Obispo County men, women, & children Walk a Mile to end sexual assault & gender-based violence. These family-friendly events create a safe environment for survivors & supporters to raise awareness for an uncomfortable topic that affects all of us in our community. Because it happens here, too.

1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of attempted or completed rape in her lifetime.
90% of adult rape victims are female.
1 in 5 girls & 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse. Children are most vulnerable to sexual abuse between the ages of
7 & 13.
20,300 military service members (10,600 men & 9,600 women)
were sexually assaulted
in 2014, a rate unchanged
from 2010.
Why Shoes?

There’s an old saying: "You can't understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes." At the Walk a Mile events, we literally walk a mile in solidarity with those who’ve experienced gender-based violence.

Traditionally this event has showcased men marching in high heels to represent the role men play in ending a form of violence that is overwhelmingly perpetrated by men against women.

However, you’re encouraged to walk in any type of shoe you wish, because gender-based violence affects us all—women, men, & children; members of the LGBTQIA+ community; incarcerated individuals; people with disabilities; those of all socioeconomic levels, races, & religions—people in all walks of life.

In 81% of elder sexual abuse cases, the perpetrator is the person's caregiver. The older the victim is, the less likely the offender will be convicted.
Millions of American men have been victims of sexual assault. 1 in 33 men has experienced an attempted or completed rape
in his lifetime.
Among people who are homeless, transgender persons report the highest rates of physical & sexual victimization, 38% reporting violence in the prior year.
Why is WAM in April?
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence & to educate communities on how to prevent it by promoting safe behaviors, thoughtful policies, & healthy relationships.
